Sheldon’s New Shell

Book Synopsis

Set to an upbeat seaside rhythm by Lily Murray and brought to life by Sam Caldwell’s vibrant artwork, Sheldon’s New Shell is a fun, rhyming picture book that combines a gentle story with real-life ecological issues that affect animals around the world.

Sheldon the hermit crab needs a new home, so it’s time for him to scour the beach and look for the perfect shell. However, the only thing he can find is rubbish! There are plastic bottles and tin cans littered everywhere. It’s a good job he has his fellow beach-side animal friends to help, as well as one little girl who is determined to clean up his environment for good.

Plastic bottles and other rubbish are huge threats to marine life. Sheldon’s New Shell is published in partnership with the successful environmental charity, Surfers Against Sewage, which is dedicated to the protection of our oceans.

Our Review Panel says...

This is a great, rhyming, picture book which will really appeal to younger children.

Written in conjunction with Surfers Against Sewage, the book has a strong environmental theme and covers real-life ecological issues facing our world. The story follows Sheldon the little hermit crab as he tries to find a new home. Unfortunately, some of the homes he finds are tin cans, plastic bottles etc, all washed up on the beach.

The environmental theme in the book is very topical and it would really suit a classroom project on pollution as well as the seaside. The story is written in rhyme and the pictures really bring the story to life. This is a definite ‘must have’ for classes studying pollution and the seaside.
