Looking for some new picture books to brighten up your book corner? Review Panel member Kate Gieler tells us more about two new colourful picture books from Maverick Arts.
1. Don’t Eat Pete
Title: Don’t Eat Pete (available here)
Author: Sue Walker
Illustrator: Carlo Beranek
Publication Date: June 2019
Don’t Eat Pete! is a super rhyming picture book by Sue Walker about an adorable pug puppy keen to avoid being eaten by a greedy troll who’s been sent to look after him.
Carlo Beranek’s bright, bold illustrations capture the lively tale and the pair’s expressions perfectly to ensure the reader takes as much from the pictures as the words. I read it with my 7 year old and we loved the fun twist at the end!
2. The MOOsic Makers
Title: The MOOsic Makers (available here)
Author: Heather Pindar
Illustrator: Barbara Bakos
Publication Date: July 2019
Heather Pindar and Barbara Bakos have created a fun farmyard frolic.
In The MOOsic Makers, the animal moo-sicians organise a gig to raise money to fix the farmer’s roof, but it doesn’t all go to plan. Mr Smarm offers to help, but he isn’t all he seems and the animals have to learn how to stay true to themselves to help their friend.
Lots of moo-related puns and details to look out for in the pictures to extend the reading experience.
