Scribble and Swoop live in Walnut Wood and are best friends. Every day they meet in the middle of the woods to play so they decide to find a place to live together. Scribble loves to write and Swoop loves to make and fix things and, soon enough, their different interests leads to a terrible quarrel. The story then explores both characters’ ranging emotions, including anger and sadness and the importance of meaning sorry when you say it. The characters resolve their issue in a caring and thoughtful way which will resonate with younger children.
Barry Timms uses effective dialogue and actions to convey the varying emotions and these are perfectly brought to life by Sean Julian’s illustrations of the two characters. The tale explores a character apologising without meaning it and the ramifications on both characters’ emotions because of this. The final resolution allows for both characters to evolve and this would be an excellent text to use with children to explore this issue.
This story is ideal for teaching younger children the importance of friendship and the meaning and importance of a heart-felt apology.
