I am Nefertiti

Book Synopsis

When Nefertiti plays the drums, the band plays as one. “I am Nefertiti” she says, and she feels ten feet tall. But when the new music teacher shortens her name to ‘Nef’, bit by bit, she starts to shrink. Without Nefertiti to keep the beat, the band is in disarray . . . “I am Nefertiti!” she whispers to herself. Drawing on her inner strength and with the support of the other children, they help Miss Potts recognise the importance of honouring Nefertiti’s name. Now, when Nefertiti keeps the beat, the music sounds so sweet! A heartwarming, joyous, empowering story of identity and belonging.

Our Review Panel says...

A simple lesson in the importance of respecting names. This charming book explores the impact of the way we refer to people and how important it is to take time to learn and use people’s names correctly. The text is full of expressive verbs to describe how the children are playing the instruments in the story. There is a lot of opportunity to explore the breadth of vocabulary through this narrative. The characters in the story represent a diverse mix of children and give plenty of opportunity for children to see themselves in this book.
