Miyuki does not want to go to bed. Her poor, weary Grandfather tries everything to get her to sleep but her mind is racing and there is far too much to do! Miyuki must prepare for the arrival of the Dragonfly Queen, water her vegetables, cover the cat in a warm blanket and even find the whole Snail family. As she desperately avoids having to go to bed, her Grandfather lovingly and gently chastises her (‘What do you have to do that cannot wait until tomorrow, Miyuki?’) until eventually Miyuki begins to yawn.
There is plenty to pore over in this exotic, intricately illustrated story; from the colourful, fantastical depictions of insects, frogs and snails, to the delicate patterns of the plants and flowers. This certainly is a visual feast.
The language is both familiar and complex, drawing on the traditions of fairy tales, whilst also offering something fresh and new. Miyuki is a wonderful character too – curious and defiant, she knows what she needs to do and will not be swayed by poor Grandfather.
There is a particularly touching scene towards the end of the story where Grandfather and Miyuki dance on top of a flower. Certainly, the relationship between these two characters is central throughout the story and is tenderly explored.
Beautiful, beguiling illustrations seamlessly work alongside gentle, repetitive, rhythmic language and a humorous, touching story.
