Most people have come across the unrelenting determination of a young child who really wants a pet. But what happens when the child in question is extra feisty and the pet they want is a bit more prehistoric than the usual bunny or kitten?
Young Eliza Jane has her heart set on a pet dinosaur. The obvious solution is a trip to the local Dinosaur Department store, where they are greeted by the charismatic store owner Mr Magisaurus, ready to show them around. In a delightfully rhythmical whistle-stop tour, we meet all kinds of dinosaurs;
Fang-toothed carnivores grinned their jaws,
Rip-roaring raptors with shark, lashing claws
and
Honking Hadrosaurs playing in herds,
Tiny feathered theropods squawking like birds.
Thankfully for those of us whose dinosaur knowledge is a little rusty, there is a gallery of dino selfies in the back of the book displaying the different types of dinosaurs mentioned and a handy pronunciation guide.
Not feeling particularly tempted to become the owner of any one of the dinosaur pets, Eliza Jane leaves the store empty handed much to the surprise of her parents and Mr Magisaurus. But little do they know that Eliza’s wild imagination has an even bigger plan hatching….
Brilliantly bright and oodles of fun, this is a charming addition to the wealth of dino-themed picture books available for younger readers.
