Firstly, this is a beautiful book. From the front cover to the end papers, each page has intricate illustrations and amazing levels of detail. I would recommend this book for that alone, however it delivers much more than that too.

The book takes the reader to the most important rivers in the world. Each page has a key piece of information about the river and the illustrations show major historical events associated with each waterway.

The author demonstrates how rivers have had an impact on human development by incorporating geography, mythology, history, legends, explorers and the flora and fauna linked to the river.

This is the type of book that someone could go back to time and time again and always discover something new. For example, do you know how an ocean differs from a sea? Did you know that Japanese spider crabs have legs that can span more than thirteen feet or that the tongue of a blue whale can weigh more than an elephant?

Rivers: A Visual History from River to Sea is filled with the kind of facts guaranteed to capture the imaginations of children. Its oversized pages are a treasure trove of information and, in my opinion, this is an essential for any class who are learning about rivers.
