With his trademark vibrant colours, distinctive style and friendly animals, which fans will recognise from ‘Superbat’ and ‘Rocketmole’, Matt Carr turns his hands (quite literally) to the topical issue of handwashing…
The animals are at play in Mrs Moo’s classroom when a special guest, Doctorpus Doris (what a name!), turns up to teach the children about germs. In simple rhyming text, Doris quickly explains the ‘whys’, ‘whens’ and ‘hows’ of handwashing. The only problem is that poor Doctorpus is the last one to lunch as she has so many extra hands to wash!
While ‘Now Wash Your Hands’ has obviously been created for using during the Covid-19 pandemic (and a donation of 50p for every copy sold will be made to the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal), the general natural of the explanations (including the need to wash hands after going to the toilet and before eating), combined with the fun handwashing song at the end, and downloadable ‘Now Wash Your Hands’ posters, mean it is perfect for use with Nursery to Year 1 any time.
For a book created in quick response to current times, ‘Now wash Your Hands’ deserves to have a long shelf-life in the Early-Years classroom.
