Jane Goodall: A Life with Chimps is part of the Trailblazer series from Stripes Publishing, which focuses on individuals who left their mark as pioneers in their field.

This book tells the fascinating story of the life of Jane Goodall, who embarked on a journey to the Tanzanian wilderness to study chimpanzees and in doing so fulfilled a life-long dream to work with animals in the wild in Africa despite having had no formal training.

Anita Ganeri, award-winning author of the Horrible Geography series, retells Jane’s amazing story, full of adventure and potential dangers. We learn about her early life and the chance encounter that led to an extraordinary life residing amongst her beloved chimpanzees. We also find out how Jane became a world-renowned primatologist, whose groundbreaking work shaped the scientific thinking of those that followed and challenged long-held theories on evolution. Later in life, she also became a pioneer in animal conservation.

Jane’s story is interspersed with lots of fabulous facts about chimpanzees and historical background for the events that took place during Jane’s life. There are lively illustrations throughout, which serve to both illuminate the story and offer further information. At the end of the book there is a timeline of events to show how Jane’s life unfolded. For those wanting to use this as a reference book, there is an index to help young readers find specific information.

This is a brilliant and inspiring read about a key scientific figure and, for those readers wanting to find out more, there is a section on further reading and links to websites that feature Jane Goodall’s important work. This would be a great addition to any school library.
