When Jane’s sister is injured, Jane is sent to take her place as a companion to Lady Cromwell for a week in the run-up to her son’s coming of age party. Even though Jane isn’t exactly happy with the situation, she throws herself into the task. Along the way, she meets some new friends who team up with her to help solve a mystery. There is a mysterious fire in the house that coincides with the theft of some very expensive horses that are intended as a birthday gift. It seems that it’s up to Jane to solve the crime and save the day.
Being a big Jane Austen fan, I absolutely loved this book! It was easy to picture a young Jane investigating and ghost hunting. I think it was made more real as it was about a real person – although you do not have to be familiar with Jane Austen’s books to enjoy the tale. Having a strong female lead character was refreshing and made the book even more enjoyable for me, especially the reactions of the male characters to her in a time when the voices of females – particularly young girls – were considered not important.
A thoroughly enjoyable book.
