What a wonderful treasure of a book! The blurb of this book states that “Our beautiful planet is in peril and young people all over the world are leading the fight to protect it,” and it certainly does bring this to light in an accessible way for children, organised into short chapters with cartoon-inspired illustrations throughout.

The book helps its readers to understand the issues around plastic pollution and climate change in a humorous, engaging way through the many quizzes and jokes that can be found on most pages. Furthermore, it also offers ideas and solutions to encourage the reader to make a difference in sometimes the simplest ways. The tick list at the very end of the book is a lovely touch as it recaps all the ways to make a difference from every page in one handy space.

What I really liked about this book were the tips and hints under the subheading ‘you can do it.’ I felt that the suggestions (for example, cloud watching or becoming a hedgehog champion) were very easy to achieve and many of the ideas encourage the reader to be outside and embrace the world around them.

From a teaching point of view, I also really liked the explanations of key individuals who are very prominent in the world of climate change and pollution. From the well-known (Sir David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg) to some I had yet even heard of, there is likely to be a personal story that will enthuse readers into wanting to play their part too.
