‘Bob goes Pop!’ is the latest story in the Bob collection from award-winning author and illustrator Marion Deuchars. Other titles in the series include ‘Bob the Artist’ and ‘Bob’s Blue Period’. The story focuses on Bob exploring experiences of teamwork and feelings of jealousy. At the beginning of the story, Bob is jealous of a new artist in town called Roy. Roy is a sculptor and everyone is amazed by his ideas. This leads to Bob being jealous of Roy, who is quickly becoming more famous than Bob. Bob tries to create work to match, but as pressure mounts, Bob eventually copies Roy’s work. During an argument over this, the artwork explodes and both artists are incredibly upset. As a new solution, Bob suggests that they work together to create something even better, which they do. In the process, the pair of artists develop a friendship and a realisation that they are stronger together. Children will enjoy the illustrations and find pleasing the rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia used in the story to engage the reader. The story may lead to discussions about what art is and how people can be successful with different styles. The story also explores the sharing of ideas and working together to achieve success. There are excellent examples of patterns, colours and different art techniques, including pop art, within the illustrations.
This book is ideal for children who enjoy art and creativity.
