Frank hero-worships his dad. To be fair, everyone in their town hero-worships his dad. Frank’s dad Gilbert is the greatest banger racer the town has ever seen. People come from all over the country to watch him. Then, one night, the unthinkable happens and Frank and Gilbert’s lives change forever.
Following on the back of the success of Demon Dentist, Billionaire Boy, The Boy in The Dress and Gangsta Granny, Walliams succeeds again with a winning mixture of humour and wit while somehow dealing sensitively with tricky subjects such as unemployment, divorce, same-sex marriage and going to prison.
Having introduced one of my more reluctant year 4 readers to it, the book is now in hot demand by the rest of the class. Meanwhile my 5 year old has begged me to retain it as her bedtime story – as the story’s pace balances beautifully with the clever use of fun fonts for exciting vocabulary and Tony Ross’ fantastically apt illustrations.
Perfect as a light-hearted, good-humoured (and just a little bit naughty) read at the end of the day. Walliams has produced a winner yet again.
