Animals at Night is a gorgeous book full of stunning illustrations which almost glow and complete with a pull-out poster which actually does glow (in the dark).
The book is split into large double-page spreads that each feature a different habitat, from a South American rainforest to a suburban street and the Australian Outback to the Arctic. Each page has a beautifully written paragraph of text telling the story of what’s happening in its scene and pointing out things of interest (‘Watch out for the lone octopus feeling for hidden creatures’ is my favourite, something which may be easily missed at first). There are also small text boxes containing interesting facts (I didn’t know that Emperor Scorpions glow blue under UV light!). The pull-out poster of a deep sea scene looks fantastic during daylight as well as when it gently glows in the dark.
This book will appeal to children who have an interest in animals and their habitats and is colourful enough for the youngest child to enjoy. My five-year-old loved the pictures and was able to read a lot of the fact boxes by himself. The paragraphs of text were short enough to hold his attention and yet still managed to be packed full of interesting information. Equally, the book will also have appeal for older readers, especially those who don’t have a lot of reading stamina or who just prefer not to have large chunks of text. A valuable addition to a classroom or library (or even just a bedroom).
