Alex Sparrow and the Zumbie Apocalypse is the third instalment in the hilarious Alex Sparrow series from Jennifer Killick, and the adventures just keep getting more outlandish and the laughs more uproarious.
If you haven’t read the earlier books (and why not?), Alex and his friend Jess have superpowers. Alex can tell when someone near him is telling a lie, but only because his ear emits a foul-smelling stink. Jess can talk to the animals, but only while undergoing a mammoth shaking and quivering fit. When they discover their archenemy Montgomery McMonaghan is back on the scene, and this time tampering with Alex’s family, the scene is set for an epic showdown featuring cool gadgets (well….a laser pen), a big chase scene, Bob (the bravest spy goldfish ever), a poisonous octopus and, of course, a granny Zumba flashmob.
The best thing about this series is the wonderful odd-couple relationship between Alex and Jess(ticles). While Alex is already imagining the movie scenes of their adventure and keeping up the bantz quota, Jess is much more down-to-earth and inclined to a good eye roll. I can imagine them bickering on fondly into old age. In this third book, it’s also lovely to see Alex discovering a slightly softer side, which fits in beautifully with the heart-warming Christmas denouement.
Another energetic and madcap creation from Jennifer Killick, which is sure to delight Alex Sparrow fans as well as welcome more to the fold.
