This beautifully produced large-format book tells the story of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, based on the writings of Pliny the Younger. The tale is told chronologically, each page offering an illustrated vista of what it would have been like for the people who lived in the town of Pompeii, as well as the surrounding towns in the Bay of Naples.

The narrative shows the events unfolding for a small cast of residents from shopkeepers to slaves, with some fictionalised scenarios, although details are based on truth, having been taken from archaeological findings and Pliny’s letter. Not only does the reader understand the fear and uncertainty at the time of the explosion, but also the geological details, such as the preceding earthquakes, descent of pumice and ash and then of course the gas clouds and lava flows. The language is sophisticated but has good clarity, and it is easy to follow how events unfolded.

The story itself is fascinating, and anyone with an interest in ancient times, geology or human reaction in the face of tragedy will find plenty enough to absorb in the illustrations. A glossary and author’s note give extra information on the history and research, and overall, this is a solid narrative of events, well told and highly engrossing.

Smile Out Loud is a humorous poetry anthology that does exactly what it says in the title: it makes the reader smile and laugh! Offering a variety of poems on all sorts of themes, there is a poem that will appeal to every reader. It also provides examples of rhyming and non-rhyming poetry, something which is important for children to experience.

The first thing to note about this book is the brilliant introduction by Joesph Coelho. He talks about the importance of performing poetry, using actions in poems and most importantly, enjoying poetry that makes you smile, giggle or gives you big belly laughs. This really helps the reader understand the purpose behind the book and each poem.

Not only will the title of the poems hook the reader in but excitingly, each poem is bursting with positivity and also comes with its own small set of instructions which explain how best to read the poem, whether any actions are needed and also how to engage the audience. This will not only help any reader of poetry to think about their audience when performing aloud, but also provide support and inspiration to those looking to write their own poetry in a similar format. The layout and spacing of the poems vary well and showcase different ways to present poetry.

The illustrations by Daniel Gray-Barnett used on each page are playful and engaging in much the same manner as the poems. They are colourful, bold and will no doubt also have the reader chuckling along.

This would be a fantastic book to support any young poet in an English lesson and it would also be a great book to share with a whole class during reading time.

From the fantastic duo behind Poems Aloud and Smile Out Loud comes another compendium of 25 original confidence-building poems to read out loud which will show children that their voice has FANTASTIC power.

From multi-award winning poet and Waterstones Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho comes 25 more brilliant, sparkling and truly original poems for children, specially written to help build confidence, develop speaking skills and help foster self-belief.

The collection contains mantras to be true to yourself, to help you feel brave, project happiness, conjure a smile, make you laugh or cheer others up. Some are odes, some can be said as personal mantras or just poems that instil confidence and help children realise the power of their voices.

Reading these poems aloud will teach children the power of a poem, encouraging them to explore the magic of language and foster a love of verse.

Did you know that a frog can stop its heart from beating? Or that an elephant’s tooth is heavier than a brick? Or that the brain of an ostrich is smaller than its eyeball?
In this book, there are 21 cross-sections that show how skeletons, organs, nerves and muscles fit together inside creatures from across the globe. Animals can have some body parts in common with us humans, such as the brain, heart and lungs – but each creature has its own unique body to help it survive and thrive in the wild.

This means that there are all kinds of weird and wonderful organs and senses in the animal kingdom, such as the honey stomach in a honeybee or the ink sac of an octopus. Prepare to be dazzled as you discover incredible information to wow your family and friends with.

It is rare to find a book which gives a completely different and exciting perspective on a historical figure, particularly those aimed at younger readers, so ‘Darwin’s Super-Pooping Worm Spectacular’ is a particularly delightful read.

As the title suggests, the book tells the story of Darwin’s investigations into the humble earthworm. It is clear that the author, Polly Owen, has discovered her passion for this topic as it is written with such an enthusiastic tone; by the end of page one, the reader is already convinced that earthworms are completely awesome!

The book recounts the range of experiments that Darwin is believed to have tried to uncover the mysteries of earthworm senses, from hearing, sight and taste. It is written in a very accessible style, with lots of humour. There is a worm on each double-page spread which gives a little more context and brings the reader back to the historical facts within the story. These small speech bubbles also direct the reader to some of the scientific vocabulary, useful to gather if using the book as a stimulus for writing projects or science discussions.

If you are looking to add a book that is charming, insightful and has more than a few poo-based jokes, then this would be a perfect choice! Key Stage Two children will enjoy the book as much as their Key Stage One peers.
