Book Title: The Stig Plays a Dangerous Game
Authors: Jon Claydon & Tim Lawler
Publisher: Piccadilly Press
Publication Date: March 2018
Most Suitable For: Upper KS2
This Top Gear spin-off is a fast-paced action story featuring cars, computer games, an evil billionaire, racing tournaments and of course, The Stig. The appeal will be obvious to some readers, but even readers with no experience of Top Gear can quickly become absorbed in this page-turning adventure full of twists and turns.
Being the new boy in town, Sam Wheeler expects things to feel strange at first. However, Sam is not prepared for exactly how strange his new town appears to be. For a start, a local school boy has disappeared. Secondly, everybody here seems obsessed with the new billionaire living in the mansion on the hill. Thirdly, numerous sightings are being reported of an unusual figure wearing white racing gear. Worst of all, nobody else seems to notice the strange goings on because adults and children alike are becoming engrossed on a mysterious new computer game called Xenon.
Aside from their high scores on Xenon, the other thing that everyone is talking about is the Bunsford TT Race. Initiated by the mysterious billionaire, the race is intended to put the town of Bunsford “back on the map” and attract famous racers to take part, including The Stig.
Together with his new friends Mini Cooper and Ford Harrison, Sam begins to investigate the strange happenings and save his town from disaster.
There is lots to appreciate in this story, but one thing that I particularly enjoyed was the humour peppered through the pages. The text is rich in witty wordplay and puns, leaving the reader with plenty to smile about at every turn.
I can see this book being a popular choice in KS2 classrooms. The Top Gear branding may initially draw readers in, but the fast paced action and witty humour will keep them turning the pages and looking forward to the next instalment.
We have two copies of The Stig Plays a Dangerous Game to give away to our followers!
