A humorous and exciting story with quirky characters and themes of friendship, fairness, teamwork and football, The Mighty Dynamo is a premier read that is likely to score highly among your class during the World Cup.
Twelve-year-old Noah Murphy’s greatest ambition is to become a professional footballer and achieving his goal is the thing he desires most in the world, second only to his dad returning home from Australia to live with him again. When Noah hears about the Schools’ World Cup tournament, he knows this might be his chance to get noticed by the talent scouts and get the big break he has always been hoping for.
Unfortunately for Noah, things turn sour when he is unexpectedly and unfairly banned from playing in his school team. Not one to give up easily, resourceful Noah decides to find his own to way enter the tournament. All he needs is a space to practise, a manager, some shirts, a team name and a group of willing new teammates. How hard can it be?
There is plenty of humour in this story and the narrative is entertaining, with Noah being a warm and relatable character. I particularly enjoyed some of the tender scenes of friendship between Noah and his best friend Stevie as they work out their new team dynamics and iron out some issues of trust and openness. I also enjoyed the shout out for girls’ football and the realism about the challenges that face talented young female players compared to their male counterparts.
This is an enjoyable story that is sure to be a big win with football fans and I’m recommending this for readers in upper KS2.
