This is a stunning picture book that I loved from the moment I first picked it up. With beautiful artwork and a gently reassuring story, this wonderful debut from Frances Ives is a joy to read and share.
Eric loves his life in the forest. He likes living with his mum and enjoying the woodland plants and creatures. Most of all he loves to look up at the sky at night and seeing the moonlight beaming down on his loved ones.
Change arrives unexpectedly when Eric and his mum relocate to the city. Everything in the new environment feels unfamiliar and even the sky somehow looks different. But before long Eric finds that the moonlight once again gives him solace and maybe, just maybe, the same moon is beaming down on his friends back home too.
Inspired by the author’s own experiences of moving from the countryside to London, this story carries a heartening message about how positives can always be found during times of change and how the magic of the natural world offers many comforts. Sometimes the differences between people and places appear to be huge, but once Eric starts looking he realises there is more that unites people living in different places than that which separates them.
This enchanting picture book is absolutely lovely and would make a wonderful addition to EYFS or KS1 classroom libraries.
