But when Ren accidentally rips apart his mum’s dragon costume for the New Year parade, he has to ask his neighbours for help. As they provide him with the materials he needs to fix the dragon, he learns all about Lunar New Year traditions around the world and soon they are all celebrating together with a festive feast. A heartfelt story from chef and food writer Lara Lee in her picture book debut, richly illustrated by Natelle Quek.

From Australian chef and food writer Lara Lee, this is a vibrant picture book focusing on global lunar new year celebrations. In the process of preparing their house and cooking a feast for the new year festivities, a young boy named Ren accidentally tears his mother’s special dragon costume. Ren’s neighbours step in to help, supplying him with the resources he needs to repair the costume.

Part of a ‘Celebrate and Make’ series, this book includes hands on activities including a baking recipe and crafting ideas. Malaysian illustrator Natelle Quek brings energy and warmth to the story, capturing the lively essence of the festivities.

We particularly liked the depiction of the colourful fabrics and the firework endpapers. The themes include inclusivity, togetherness, multicultural and global traditions, culinary customs and real world experiences. This is a great resource for Reception and KS1.
