Book Synopsis

A cosy children’s Christmas book written and illustrated by the inimitable Jane Chapman.

It’s almost Christmas, and all the animals are out in the wood to pick the perfect tree. “Ours is little, just like me!” beams Cubby. Carefully, she and Daddy dig up the tree, put it in a pot and take it home. Cubby quickly grows very attached to Little Tree. She sings it songs and reads it stories. And on Christmas Day there’s one last present – a bright red ribbon to go round Little Tree’s pot. But when Christmas is over, and Little Tree has to go outside, Cubby is so sad! Luckily, Daddy has the perfect solution: Little Tree will live right outside in the garden until next winter, when the Christmas magic can start all over again.

This heartwarming festive story is tied up with a subtle environmental message! Just like The Christmas Pine by Julia Donaldson and Victoria Sandøy, The Christmas Eve Tree by Delia Huddy and Emily Sutton, and Dasher by Matt Tavares, The Littlest Christmas Tree is a true modern classic.

Our Review Panel says...

The Littlest Christmas Tree by Jane Chapman is a delightful, heartwarming story perfect for sharing with children in the lead-up to Christmas. The beautiful illustrations and cosy narrative are an enchanting combination, offering a lovely seasonal read that will capture the imaginations of young listeners.

The story follows the adorable character Cubby, a young bear who, along with her father, carefully selects a small Christmas tree from the forest. Jane Chapman’s writing is simple and engaging, making it accessible to young children, while the illustrations add a warmth and charm that enhances the festive atmosphere.

There is a tender emotional arc in the story. As Christmas ends, Cubby is sad about saying goodbye to Little Tree. The narrative delicately addresses feelings of attachment and loss but ultimately provides a comforting and hopeful resolution. Daddy Bear’s clever solution not only soothes Cubby’s sadness but subtly introduces an environmental theme, encouraging children to appreciate and care for nature.

For EYFS or KS1 teachers and educators, The Littlest Christmas Tree is ideal for the weeks leading up to Christmas and provides rich opportunities for discussion and classroom activities. It explores changing seasons and environmental care, offering a modern classic with an eco-friendly message. It is perfect to spark conversations about sustainability in a relatable and heartwarming context while fostering a love of festive traditions.

Jane Chapman’s work again shines through with enchanting illustrations and a thoughtful, engaging storyline, making The Littlest Christmas Tree a must-have addition to any classroom’s Christmas collection.
