Book Synopsis

Poya is fascinated by all the different colours the sky can be and dreams of one day being able to reach it. His grandfather, Opi, has an idea: the kite he made with his own grandpa . . .

When Poya loses his footing, his dreams are blown away with the kite. But Opi knows just what to do.

A heartwarming story about family, and the power and beauty of nature, by award-winning picture book creator, Layn Marlow.

Our Review Panel says...

This heartwarming story explores the relationship of a grandfather, Opi, and his grandson, Poya, while they fly a kite that he had made with his own grandpa. When Poya tumbles and loses the kite, the wind is too strong and it flies away. He is comforted by Opi, and they make another kite together. But after talking about all the colours of the sky which change as the sky turns throughout the day and the seasons, what colour would they choose?

The beautiful illustrations throughout this story convey the changes in the weather and the movement of the wind increases, which connect with the characters’ feelings and add depth to the narrative. There is a nice addition in the back of the book which provides instructions to make a kite which children will love to try.

It’s an atmospheric exploration of nature which young children will enjoy and want to read again. Perfect for a read aloud or for beginner readers. It could be used for PSHE but also as an introduction to a DT project or science as it encompasses weather, forces, and nature.
