Book Synopsis

The launch of a hilarious new highly illustrated diary-format fiction series, from award-winning author-illustrator Rebecca Patterson!

Lennox Dean and his best friend Idris dream of being cooler, richer and more popular, and they have plans to make it happen! When their teacher sets a diary-writing assignment, they grab the chance to impress their classmates by making their lives seem WAY more exciting than they really are. But things spiral out of control when they accidentally invite everyone to the coolest party EVER. How are they going to make it happen in real life and avoid total embarrassment – by next weekend???

The first book in a brand new, highly illustrated diary-format series from Rebecca Patterson, the award-winning author-illustrator of My Big Shouting Day, Lennox Dean: Living the Dream is hilarious, relatable and brilliantly readable, with a unique, joyously funny voice and an incredibly distinctive visual style. A celebration of friendship, families and the messiness of ordinary life, it’s perfect for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Loki, and Tom Gates.

Our Review Panel says...

I really enjoyed this fresh and fun diary-style book, which will sit well with fans of Tom Gates and Loki. It really becomes a bit of a meta-diary – a diary about diary writing!

When the teacher sets a diary writing task for the class, Lennox isn’t exactly thrilled. The humour gradually escalates through the story as Lennox and his best friend Idris see their diaries quickly evolving from chronicles of not much happening to wild fantasies about private helicopters, Dubai trips, amazing party plans and archery trophies.

Rebecca Patterson’s doodle illustrations carry the comedy element perfectly and prominently, featuring great visual gags like a teacher’s raised eyebrow taking up a whole page or epic action shots of mice popping out of toasters or superhero party scenes.

Amid the comedy, the story beautifully captures what it feels like to have a best friend. The bond between Lennox and his best friend Idris is lovely and authentic, from shared wink codes and alien pranks in town to joint party planning, with a dose of bickering, and plenty of in-jokes.

Highly recommended for Year 3 and 4 classrooms, this is also a great choice for tempting reluctant readers in the older primary years. Super fun and I hope for more in the series.
