This book is a hilarious read and certainly a book for those who have enjoyed Hiccup’s previous adventures from the famous (soon to be film) series ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.

I used this book as a class read for Year 2 and they adored the illustrations in the ‘Guide to Viking Tribes’ with tribe names such as ‘The Hairy Hooligans’ and ‘The Meatheads’. That immediately grabbed their attention and they were desperate to hear more. Be prepared for lots of giggling from the reader!

The book is initially written in the first person from Hiccups point of view and similar to a diary with crossings out before beginning with disastrous lesson number 1 ‘The Art of Battle’ renamed by Hiccup as ‘Doom of Darkwing’. It is full of adventure, mishaps and friendships and would be suitable for early readers who enjoy having illustrations to break up text. A surprise for the reader is the Dragonese dictionary- perfect for wannabe dragon riders! A fantastic book addition to the How to Train Your Dragon series.
