This is a gorgeous, autumnal story with glowing illustrations that would make a great class read aloud. Mole has placed his pumpkin outside and lit the golden glow of the candle, but he is afraid of the dark so rushes back inside. His friends visit, dressed up and eager for treats and mole obliges, also sharing his light with his friends as theirs have blown out in the windy weather. When he realises they have dropped some of their warm clothes in the storm, Mole sets out to find his friends, but when his light blows out, fear takes over. However, the kindness he gave others returns to him and as he travels back home with company, he realises there can be beauty in the darkness too.

A beautiful and gentle story about sharing your light through acts of kindness and the power of friendship to overcome fears.

This is a beautiful and gently empowering book for young children. Then book combines impressive facts about nature while positioning impressive facts about humans right in the centre. Without overcomplicating anything, it tells children, for example, facts about an ocean scene where a huge blue whale leaves a trail of tiny bubbles behind, and let’s readers wonder at the fact that they are bigger than a bubble and smaller than a whale – but just as awe-inducing as both.

The illustrations bring each page to life and the additional facts are subtle on the page and give extra information about the mentioned items. The book shows how comparisons can be a good thing and how truly unique we are.
