Huw Aaron Books

Huw Aaron’s book is a brilliantly offbeat addition to the bedtime genre, and an award-winning one at that.

The story follows a sleepy blob being tucked into bed in a normal suburban house, while its parent reflects on all the other monsters who are doing exactly the same routine.

The humour is spot on and captures the familiar back-and-forth of bedtime routines and parents trying to get a child to settle. The illustrations highlight the side-by-side nature of the weird and wonderful fantasy elements (monsters, brains-in-jars and slimy lairs) and the familiar, quotidian routines that will be recognisable to many readers. Beneath the slime and the fun, it’s a lovely, quirky way to show that no matter how different we look or feel, we share similarities.

This is a must-have for the classroom and a perfectly fun twist on the traditional bedtime story.

Picturebook

From the author of Unfairies and Sleep Tight, Disgusting Bob, comes a hilarious and beautifully illustrated picture book all about Molly: a fine specimen that one would find living in the jungle at home with all the other monkeys…except she’s not a monkey…she’s a pig-a monkey-pig! But isn’t she just what every troop of monkeys needs?!

This book shows that you can be who you want to be and others should accept you for who you are – not what you look like or how you eat a banana!

This is a great book to share with KS1. It is filled to the brim with a rich vocabulary that encourages discussion and exploration. A picture book worthy of every bookshelf — and one sure to make us smile.

Graphic novel

The opening to the book has illustrations that introduce you to some of the characters, followed by a unique map, which gives you a brief overview of The Garden, showing the Unfairies and Tree Fairies holdings. Pip, the little hero fairy of this story, sets out with his new friend Midge by his side to deliver a report on how the winter food stores have gone mouldy. Danger seems to follow him throughout, or perhaps he follows danger!

His encounters with sticky, bug-bum honey, a crash involving a beetle and centipede and the carrying of a prophecy are just a few of the quests set out for Pip. Throughout the book, double-page spreads share a map or information page based on different areas of The Garden and Oakhold, both unique and humorous.

This graphic novel is a fantastic combination of a Welsh author, who provides endless laughs, and an Italian illustrator, who brings the colours and vibrancy. It ticks all the boxes for a fun read.
