Eric Carle Books

Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a perennial favourite with children and adults alike. Its imaginative illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week.

Among his more well-known stories about hungry caterpillars and mixed-up chameleons, Eric Carle also wrote about pancakes! This story follows an American boy called Jack who goes through the process of making his own pancakes, including milking the cow and cutting the wheat. A useful story for tracing where the different ingredients come from.

From the creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, this is the story of a Santa-like farmer who dreams of snow on Christmas Eve. When he wakes, he discovers real snow has fallen, just in time for him to bring special gifts to his animals. This is a multi-sensory edition, complete with surprise flaps, textures and Eric Carle’s iconic collage-style illustrations that would make an excellent stimulus for Christmas creative projects. We particularly recommend Dream Snow for EYFS and Year 1.

In this sparse text, Eric Carle empowers every budding artist to find joy in their creations and use their imaginations without the constraints of the ‘right’ colours for objects or other artistic conventions. The young artist in the story is joyful in his creations – a blue horse, a green lion or a purple fox? Why not! Carle’s fictional story is inspired by artist Franz Marc, who painted animals in bright and unusual colours.
